| This week's Monday night drill focused on “Initial Structure Fire Tasks” for our Fire and EMS personnel.
During the drill, Vista Fire Department members worked through the critical tasks that must be completed during the initial stages of a structure fire response. Firefighters reviewed areas such as initial scene size-up, apparatus positioning, establishing a water supply, hoseline deployment, pump operations, communications, and coordinating the initial fire attack.
Members also reviewed the importance of assigning and coordinating additional fireground responsibilities as crews arrive, including search and rescue operations, accountability, ventilation, and maintaining situational awareness as conditions change.
Vista EMS personnel trained alongside our Firefighters to reinforce the EMS responsibilities associated with a structure fire response, including responder rehabilitation, medical monitoring, preparing for potential Firefighter or civilian injuries, and coordinating patient care when needed.
Structure fires require many different tasks to take place simultaneously and depend on clear communication and teamwork between responding personnel. Because the Vista Fire Department provides both Fire and EMS services, training together on these incidents allows our members to better understand each other's roles and operate as one coordinated team when an actual emergency occurs.
Regularly reviewing these initial structure fire responsibilities helps ensure our personnel are prepared to establish an organized, safe, and effective operation from the moment the first Vista Fire Department units arrive on scene.
