| On Thursday, April 16th at approximately 1240 hours, the Vista Fire Department was dual dispatched with the South Salem Fire Department for a reported structure fire with entrapment within their fire district.
Engine 141, Tanker 4, Utility 256, and Car 2561 responded. Notably, Firefighter Phil Wanderman was among the first to arrive on scene, as he was already in close proximity at the time of dispatch. Although in civilian clothing, Firefighter Wanderman immediately assisted alongside members of the South Salem Fire Department and multiple law enforcement agencies, including Lewisboro Police, New York State Police, and Westchester County Police. His actions under extremely dangerous conditions are commendable, and we proudly recognize his dedication and courage.
Upon arrival, first-due units were met with advanced fire conditions and multiple injured civilians. Fire and EMS personnel initiated immediate patient care while simultaneously conducting searches for trapped occupants. Rapidly deteriorating fire conditions resulted in several first responders sustaining injuries, including thermal burns and smoke inhalation.
As mutual aid resources arrived, coordinated fire attack and primary search operations were conducted across multiple floors. Departments operating on scene included South Salem, Vista, Katonah, Bedford Hills, Bedford, Croton Falls, and Yorktown Heights Fire Departments. As the incident escalated, crews were eventually joined by numerous additional fire departments and EMS agencies from across New York State and Connecticut, highlighting the large-scale, multi-agency response required for this incident.
During the course of operations, worsening fire conditions and structural instability led to multiple mayday transmissions. Crews operating inside the structure located a trapped civilian, who was removed via portable ladder by members from multiple agencies. EMS personnel provided rapid advanced life support care and transport. A second victim was located shortly thereafter as search efforts continued.
Despite aggressive and coordinated interior operations, fire conditions continued to intensify, ultimately necessitating a transition to defensive operations.
Tragically, both civilians located during the incident later succumbed to their injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
The Vista Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims affected by this tragic incident. We also extend our thoughts and support to the injured first responders, including the Lewisboro Police Officer currently recovering in the hospital.
