| This Sunday morning, the Vista Fire Department held a Firefighter Skills Class focused on strengthening core firefighting skills and supporting members working toward their next level of certification.
The "Firefighter Skills Class" focused on ground ladder operations, with members reviewing a detailed PowerPoint that covered ladder types and construction, proper ladder selection, length and reach considerations, correct placement and angles, climbing techniques, working from ladders, and key safety practices. This training highlighted the critical role ground ladders play in fireground operations, including gaining access to upper floors, providing secondary means of egress, supporting ventilation efforts, and facilitating rescues. Emphasis was placed on the importance of proper technique—such as footing, securing ladders, maintaining three points of contact, and using leg locks—to reduce the risk of injury and ensure safe operations in high-stress environments. This training not only equips our firefighters with the foundational knowledge needed for success in the Firefighter I program, but also helps those who have already completed Firefighter I to maintain and refine their skills.
