| It is with profound sadness that the Vista Volunteer Fire Department shares the unexpected passing of former member and Ex-Foreman Michael Canil.
Mike joined the Vista Volunteer Fire Department in November 2014 and faithfully served our community until 2020, when he and his family moved to Bethel, Connecticut. During his time with us, he held the rank of Foreman from March 2016 through May 2020 and served on Engine 142 and Ambulance 84B2. Mike was an Interior Firefighter and a dedicated EMT who could always be counted on to step forward when needed.
One of our fondest memories of Mike dates back to 2016, when he helped lead Engine 142 to win the Best Fire Apparatus trophy at our Annual Dinner. Mike spent countless hours meticulously cleaning and preparing the engine for inspection, and the pride he felt when the hard work paid off was unmistakable. That moment reflected who Mike was—committed, hardworking, and deeply proud of his company and his department.
After becoming an EMT with Vista, Mike continued his service with Westchester EMS, further building on the foundation he established here. In September 2021, he achieved his goal of becoming a career firefighter when he was hired by the Fairfield Fire Department. We were incredibly proud to see his dedication to the fire and EMS service grow from his time in Vista into a full-time career.
Mike leaves behind his wife, Katie, his daughter, Michaela, and his son, William. Our hearts are broken for his family, friends, and all who knew him. Mike was not only a respected member of this Department—he was a good friend. He would reach out just to check in, and he still made a point to stop by the Firehouse on Sunday mornings on his way home from work. His presence, kindness, and friendship meant more than words can express.
Rest in peace, Mike. You will always be part of the Vista family. |
