| This week’s Monday Night Drill was a “Fire and EMS Familiarization” drill for our members. During this training, our EMS providers gained first-hand experience with the protective clothing and equipment used by firefighters, including turnout gear, helmets, gloves, and the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). They learned about the components and operation of the SCBA, the importance of proper fit and air management, and the physical challenges of working in full firefighting gear. EMS personnel then had the chance to wear the gear, practice moving, and simulate performing tasks while experiencing the added weight, heat, and reduced visibility it creates. This cross-training not only builds a deeper understanding of the demands placed on our firefighters during emergency operations but also strengthens teamwork and communication so that whether responding to a fire, motor vehicle accident, or medical emergency, our crews can operate seamlessly together. While this drill was taking place, several of our members attended a Ladder Company Operations training at an acquired structure courtesy of the Croton Falls Fire Department. Ladder Company Operations involves the specialized skills required to work from aerial ladders and ladder trucks during fireground operations. These skills include roof ventilation, forcible entry, search and rescue, and providing elevated access or water streams to a structure. Training on an acquired structure allows firefighters to practice these techniques in a realistic environment, enhancing both safety and effectiveness. We thank the Croton Falls Fire Department for inviting us to participate in this valuable training opportunity.
