| On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Westchester County Legislator Erika Pierce hosted the 2026 Westchester County District 2 Volunteer Awards at the Katonah Village Library. The event recognized local volunteers whose service, dedication, and contributions have made a meaningful impact throughout the community.
Vista Fire Department Firefighter Phil Wanderman was among this year’s award recipients. Firefighter Wanderman was honored for his heroic actions during a multiple-alarm structure fire in South Salem on April 16, 2026—the same actions for which he received the Vista Fire Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor.
While in civilian clothing and among the first to arrive, Firefighter Wanderman acted without hesitation to remove individuals from immediate danger as fire conditions rapidly deteriorated. He then continued assisting fire personnel by helping advance hoselines and supporting ongoing fire suppression and rescue operations. Firefighter Wanderman sustained smoke inhalation injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and later released.
