This week's Monday drill was a "Building Construction" class for our Firefighters and an "Active Shooter" class for our EMT's.

Led by Captain Mike Peck, the Vista Firefighters went over the different types of Building Construction in the Vista Fire District, reviewing each of the five types of Building Construction in the Fire Service and how our Firefighters can identify each type of Building Construction. The five types of Building Construction that every Firefighter should know are: Fire-Resistive (Type 1), Non-Combustible (Type 2), Ordinary (Type 3), Heavy Timber (Type 4) and Wood-Framed (Type 5).

Led by District Manager Tom Ritchey, our Vista EMTs & EMT Candidates reviewed active shooter response and preparedness. Active Shooter/Assailant incidents are often unpredictable, evolve rapidly and have substantial consequences. Based on FBI statistics, there have been more than 160 active shooter/hostile events in the U.S. since 2000. Our Vista EMT's & EMT Candidates held discussions related to the benefits of EMS personnel preplanning ways to assist law enforcement during an active shooter event.
