This week's Monday night drills focused on a “New Canaan Tanker Shuttle” for our Firefighters and “EMS Charting” for our EMS personnel.

During the “New Canaan Tanker Shuttle,” Vista Firefighters trained alongside neighboring Fire Department personnel on rural water supply operations. A tanker shuttle is utilized during fires in areas where fire hydrants or other reliable water sources are not readily available. Tankers transport water from a designated fill site to the fire scene, where the water can be transferred into portable ponds and supplied to Fire Apparatus operating at the incident.

Being that much of the Vista Fire District and surrounding communities rely on rural water supply operations, regularly practicing tanker shuttles is important to ensuring that responding departments can establish and maintain an adequate water supply during a fire. Training with neighboring agencies also allows personnel to practice the communications and coordination necessary when multiple departments are working together during a large-scale incident.

At the same time, our Vista EMS personnel participated in an “EMS Charting” drill focused on properly documenting patient care using our electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) system. Members reviewed the documentation of patient information, assessments, vital signs, treatments, response and transport information, and the importance of accurately documenting the care provided during an EMS call.

Patient care reports serve as an important medical and legal record of each EMS response. Regularly reviewing proper charting procedures helps ensure our EMTs are accurately and consistently documenting the assessment, treatment, and care provided to our patients.

We would like to thank the New Canaan Fire Department and all participating personnel for the opportunity to train together during the tanker shuttle.
