This week's Monday night drills focused on “Assisting the Paramedic” for our EMS personnel and “Ladders” for our Firefighters.

During the “Assisting the Paramedic” EMS drill, Vista EMS personnel reviewed how they can effectively support Paramedics during advanced life support patient care. Members reviewed the equipment commonly utilized by Paramedics during emergency responses and the important role EMTs play in assisting with patient assessment, cardiac monitoring, equipment preparation, patient movement, and continued care during transport.

Training alongside and understanding the responsibilities of our Paramedic partners helps our EMS personnel work more efficiently as part of a coordinated patient-care team during serious medical emergencies.

During the “Ladders” Fire drill, Vista Firefighters reviewed proper ground ladder operations, including ladder selection, carrying and raising techniques, proper placement, climbing, and safely operating from a ladder while carrying tools and equipment. Members also reviewed how ladders are utilized during structure fires for operations such as ventilation, access, rescue, and providing Firefighters with an emergency means of egress should conditions inside a building deteriorate.

Regularly practicing ladder operations helps ensure our Firefighters can deploy and operate ground ladders safely, efficiently, and as a coordinated team during emergency incidents.
