| This week’s Monday night drills focused on “Splinting” for our EMS personnel and “South Salem Tanker Shuttle” for our Firefighters.
During the “Splinting” EMS drill, Vista EMS personnel reviewed the assessment and stabilization of patients with suspected extremity injuries. Members practiced several splinting techniques, including the proper use of a traction splint and how to safely sling and swathe a patient with a shoulder or arm injury.
Splinting helps immobilize an injured extremity, limit movement, prevent further injury, and assist with managing a patient’s pain during care and transportation. Regular hands-on practice helps ensure our EMS personnel can select and properly apply the appropriate splinting technique when treating fractures, dislocations, and other musculoskeletal injuries.
During the “South Salem Tanker Shuttle” drill, Vista Firefighters joined the South Salem Fire Department for a coordinated rural water-supply training exercise. Members practiced using tankers to transport water from a designated fill site to the fireground, where the water could be discharged into portable ponds and supplied to firefighting apparatus.
Tanker-shuttle operations are essential in areas where fire hydrants or dependable drafting locations may not be available. Maintaining a continuous water supply requires effective communication, apparatus coordination, proper pump operations, and efficient filling and dumping procedures.
Because the Vista Fire District and many surrounding communities include areas without hydrant coverage, regularly practicing these operations helps ensure neighboring departments can work together safely and effectively during a significant fire.
