| This week’s Monday night drills focused on “Psychiatric Emergencies” for our EMS personnel and “Forcible Entry” for our Firefighters.
During the “Psychiatric Emergencies” drill, Vista EMS personnel reviewed how to recognize, assess, and support individuals experiencing mental health or behavioral health crises. Members discussed patient communication, scene safety, de-escalation techniques, medical conditions that may contribute to altered behavior, and the resources available to help connect patients with appropriate care.
These incidents can be complex and require patience, compassion, situational awareness, and coordination with other responding agencies. Reviewing these procedures better prepares our EMS personnel to provide safe, respectful, and effective care to individuals experiencing a crisis.
During the “Forcible Entry” drill, Vista Firefighters reviewed the procedures, tools, and techniques used to gain access to a building through a locked or obstructed door during an emergency. Members practiced evaluating doors, selecting the appropriate tools, and working together to force entry safely and efficiently.
Rapid access can make a critical difference when firefighters must reach occupants, locate the source of a fire, or prevent further fire spread. Practicing on a forcible entry prop allowed our members to safely practice various tools and techniques while refining these important skills in a controlled environment.
