| This week’s Monday drill featured a “Hydrant Service” drill for our firefighters and a “Geriatrics” training session for our EMS personnel. Our firefighters spent the evening performing preventative maintenance and inspections on the district’s dry hydrants throughout the community. Regular hydrant servicing is critical to ensuring our motor pump operators can quickly and efficiently establish a reliable water supply during emergencies. Over time, dry hydrants can become obstructed with silt, debris, or other buildup that may impact performance if not routinely maintained and tested. During the drill, members inspected hydrants, flushed and tested water flow, and verified accessibility and operational readiness. Driver trainees also had the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience operating pump panels and drafting water under real-world conditions, helping build confidence and proficiency for emergency responses. At the same time, our EMS personnel participated in a geriatrics-focused training session reviewing the unique challenges associated with caring for elderly patients. Members discussed age-related physiological changes, common medical emergencies affecting geriatric patients, communication techniques, fall-related injuries, medication considerations, and patient assessment strategies. Emphasis was placed on recognizing subtle signs and symptoms that may present differently in older adults, while also reinforcing compassionate patient care and decision-making during medical emergencies. Ongoing training like this helps ensure our providers remain prepared to deliver high-quality care to one of the most vulnerable populations we serve.
