| This week’s Monday drill was a “Pinned and Burning” scenario for our members.
During this hands-on training, firefighters and EMS personnel worked together at simulated motor vehicle accidents involving trapped occupants along with active vehicle fires. Crews practiced scene size-up, hazard recognition, securing vehicles, fire suppression, patient access, and coordinated extrication while working under realistic time pressures.
Members also trained on key operational tasks such as deploying foam lines for vehicle fire suppression, packaging trapped occupants inside vehicles, placing patients on air when needed, and performing vehicle movement and lift techniques when multiple vehicles are involved in a collision. The drill also emphasized making critical command and tactical decisions while responding to and arriving on scene.
Training on these incidents is critical because motor vehicle crashes are among the most common emergencies first responders face, and the presence of fire greatly increases risk to victims and rescuers alike. Members must be able to quickly stabilize vehicles, protect patients from fire conditions, control hazards such as fuel leaks and batteries, and safely remove occupants while providing life-saving care.
We were joined by members from the South Salem Fire Department, Pound Ridge Fire Department, and the New Canaan (CT) Fire Department, allowing agencies to train together and strengthen the coordination that is essential during mutual aid responses.
Thank you to Westchester County Fire Training Instructors Tim Hannigan, Dave Russell, Gene Malone, Brett Hendrie, Sean Kelly, Jon Mackey, Rex Morris and Ryan Blackwell for leading the training and helping our members continue to build the skills needed to protect our community.
