This Sunday morning, we held our "Onboarding Module Training Program" for several new members of the Vista Fire Department.

The program covered three modules, including:

Module 1 – "Now That I’ve Joined, What’s Next?"

This foundational module introduces probationary members to the department and outlines what to expect during their initial phase. It covers key responsibilities such as responding to calls, attending drills, assisting with truck checks, and understanding the expectations of being a new member. The goal is to help members acclimate quickly and begin contributing confidently.

Module 2 – "Learning the Radio Room"

This module familiarizes new members with one of the most vital communication hubs in the department. It provides an in-depth look at the radio room’s functions and operations, ensuring that probationary members are comfortable using radio equipment and understand communication protocols during emergencies.

Module 4 - "Fire Scene Operations"

In this module, new members were introduced to fire scene procedures. While acknowledging that each fire emergency can unfold differently, this training established a foundational understanding of our approach—from initial dispatch to on-scene tactics. The focus was on teamwork, safety, and following established operational protocols.

To reinforce the concepts covered in the classroom portion, a hands-on practical segment was included. This allowed probationary members to view fire scene scenarios, giving them a clearer understanding of how incidents are managed in real time. From initial size-up and establishing a water supply to equipment staging, hose line deployment, and team coordination, the practical exercises offered valuable insight into what to expect and how to operate effectively during actual fireground operations.

The "Onboarding Module Training Program" is an eight-module curriculum designed to equip probationary members with the essential knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to succeed. Each module builds on the last, blending hands-on training with key theoretical insights into firefighting, EMS, and departmental culture. This program not only provides a solid technical foundation but also fosters connection, confidence, and pride in being part of the Vista Fire Department. By the end of the program, new members are well-prepared to serve safely, effectively, and as part of a unified team.
