This week's Monday Night Drill was a "Pump Operations" drill for our Firefighters and a "Trauma Emergencies" drill for our EMTs. The "Pump Operations" drill focused on developing core driver and pump operator skills critical to our firefighting operations. Vista Firefighters practiced several key evolutions, including drafting and flowing master streams, drafting from the dry hydrant using both side and front suctions, drafting directly from the pond with a floating strainer and multiple lengths of hard suction, and drafting from a portable pond. These hands-on evolutions are the foundation for many of our future water supply operations and an important step in driver/motor pump operator (MPO) development. In the "Trauma Emergencies" drill, Vista EMS personnel reviewed trauma protocols as outlined by New York State and practiced key emergency medical skills. Topics covered included bleeding and shock management, blunt force trauma, crush injuries, head, neck, back, spinal trauma, and multi-system trauma. Members participated in hands-on stations where they practiced maintaining spinal precautions, immobilizing spinal and extremity injuries, and managing burns and amputations. This drill reinforced the importance of trauma protocol, as many of these foundational skills carry over to broader patient care responsibilities that our EMTs are expected to handle in the field.
