This module provided a general overview of how the department manages emergency medical services (EMS) scenes. It emphasized the importance of flexibility, as every EMS emergency presents unique challenges. The goal was to equip probationary members with the knowledge needed to assist during EMS calls, understand departmental procedures, and recognize the different roles on scene.
To reinforce the concepts covered in the classroom portion, a hands-on practical segment was included. This allowed probationary members to participate in simulated EMS scenarios, giving them a clearer understanding of how scenes are managed in real time. From patient assessment and scene safety to equipment staging and team coordination, the practical exercises offered valuable insight into what to expect and how to contribute effectively during actual EMS calls.
Module 4 - "Fire Scene Operations"
In this module, new members were introduced to fire scene procedures. While acknowledging that each fire emergency can unfold differently, this training established a foundational understanding of our approach—from initial dispatch to on-scene tactics. The focus was on teamwork, safety, and following established operational protocols.
To reinforce the concepts covered in the classroom portion, a hands-on practical segment was included. This allowed probationary members to view fire scene scenarios, giving them a clearer understanding of how incidents are managed in real time. From initial size-up and establishing a water supply to equipment staging, hose line deployment, and team coordination, the practical exercises offered valuable insight into what to expect and how to operate effectively during actual fireground operations.
Module 5 - "Apparatus Overview"
Hands-on learning is crucial to understanding how equipment and vehicles function. This module introduces probationary members to the department’s apparatus, ensuring they become familiar with the vehicles and tools used in emergency operations. It includes a comprehensive review of how to operate key pieces of equipment safely and efficiently.
During the hands-on portion of the training, probationary members rotated through each piece of apparatus in the Vista Fire Department fleet. This interactive walkthrough took place while active members were conducting the department’s weekly truck reports, which are completed every Monday evening. New members had the opportunity to observe and ask questions about equipment placement, vehicle capabilities, and operational procedures, gaining valuable real-world context as they learned directly from experienced personnel engaged in routine checks. This approach provided both exposure and education, bridging classroom instruction with field familiarity.
The "Onboarding Module Training Program" is an eight-module curriculum designed to equip probationary members with the essential knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to succeed. Each module builds on the last, blending hands-on training with key theoretical insights into firefighting, EMS, and departmental culture. This program not only provides a solid technical foundation but also fosters connection, confidence, and pride in being part of the Vista Fire Department. By the end of the program, new members are well-prepared to serve safely, effectively, and as part of a unified team.
The “Firefighter Skills Class” focused on 1-3/4" and 2-1/2" hoseline advancement and hydrant operations, while also supporting our newest firefighter as part of Module 4: Fire Scene Operations. This hands-on training gave members the opportunity to practice how we deploy, advance, and supply attack lines on the fireground, reinforcing the importance of water supply, coordination, and situational awareness during active operations. Working with both handline sizes allowed members to better understand flow requirements, nozzle reaction, and their roles in different fire attack scenarios. This training not only equips our firefighters with the foundational knowledge needed for success in the Firefighter I program, but also helps those who have already completed Firefighter I to maintain and refine their skills.
The Driver Training program is how Vista Fire Department personnel are trained and cleared to operate Fire and EMS apparatus. Members complete several hours of "drive time" behind the wheel of each vehicle before being approved as drivers. The training includes an equipment overview of all apparatus and instruction on operating the pump panel for the fire engines. The program begins with members learning to operate Utility 256, followed by the ambulances, Engine 142, Engine 141, and Tanker 4.
