What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the Vista Volunteer Fire Department? What would I tell someone who is interested in joining? I couldn't tell you enough. How long have you been a member for?

I have been a member since December of 2010.

What made you join the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

I joined the department to be a part of something bigger than myself. It was an opportunity to couple the satisfaction of volunteering and assisting those in need with the adrenaline seeking part of me that loves running into burning buildings, driving the engine, and potentially saving a life. The family we have at the Vista FD is a plus too. Joining was a no-brainier. The Vista FD is right down the road and the organization as a whole, coupled with its interactions within the community make for an appealing and rewarding opportunity.

What does serving the Vista Fire District community mean to you?

Serving the community is a unique experience, in my opinion. It could be your friend, your neighbor, or even someone in your own home who dials 911 and relies upon the men and women who serve in the Vista Fire Department, blindly might I add. There is an immense amount of trust and faith put in you as the first responder, and that is a feeling you need to experience to understand. You are 911 on that person's worst day. You are the face of emergency services in the community in which you serve, and yet no amount of money can change your desire to serve.

What has been your greatest achievement with the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

I would say that my greatest achievement within the department is "Firefighter of The Year". I was awarded FF of The Year for 2013-2014. Having been on well over 100 calls, only missing a couple of drills throughout the year, and taking on the position of Foreman of Engine 141, after previously having served as Foreman of Tanker 4, the honor was well-earned and the satisifaction of which is overwhelming. The award is coveted, for sure, however those who stand out as having served with distinction within the community are the only candidates who are considered for the award. That, in and of itself is an honor.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

What would I tell someone who is interested in joining? I couldn't tell you enough. Stop by on a Monday night to observe a drill and see for yourself what it's like to be a part of our family. The experience is worth more than I can describe to you through this medium.
