How long have you been a member for?

I joined in August 2006, so for 8 years now.

What made you join the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

A number of years ago, I had a medical emergency and called 911. When the Vista Fire Department came to my door, I recognized some of the first responders as members of my community and it struck me as odd that people like myself would give up their free time and a good night’s sleep simply to help someone in need. I’m not generally one to get emotional, but when this group of strangers and acquaintances came to my aid looking for absolutely nothing in return – not even a thank you – it left an indelible impression. I suppose the last 8 years have been my version of “pay it forward.”

What does serving the Vista Fire District community mean to you?

It means recognizing that we are part of a broader community. What we get out of that community is directly related to what we invest. I wanted my children to grow up in a place where people look out for one another not when it’s convenient, but when it’s necessary. By serving in the department, I get to make that vision a reality.

What has been your greatest achievement with the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

People call us when they face the worst depths of what fate sends their way. Whenever we can make that bottom a little less dark; a little less desperate, we’ve done our job. There is a real joy in doing something good for someone else. Every time we do that, it’s an achievement worthy of note.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the Vista Volunteer Fire Department?

It’s easy to talk about doing good works. By joining the VFD, you get to make those words a reality.
